ChildHelp Wings celebrates philanthropy in style in “Fashion through the Ages”

Fifty five years ago, young Hollywood actresses Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson began Childhelp in order to defeat and treat child abuse, creating a community of love. The 7-time Nobel Peace Prize nominated duo’s idea has grown each decade since then, and the fashions during those years have done just the same.

At the Childhelp Wings 55th anniversary event, actress Raven-Symoné and “Scottsdale’s King of Couture,” Robert Black of Fashion by Robert Black led the audience through the developments in the Childhelp organization in each decade before showcasing the looks accordingly.

Beginning in the ‘60s and ending in present day, local kids, teens, young adults and even families modeled fashions from past and present provided by Annie Boomer Vintage, Just Ruby, Peek and Elan Style. Some standouts for each decade included the Jackie O signature pink suit from the ‘60s, polyester pants from the ‘70s, the shoulder-padded power suit of the ‘80s, and the timeless Chanel-logo-printed dress (it was essential to own labels in the 90s!). Each look was composed of vintage clothing and modern shoes that the models owned. The looks came to life with staple songs such as “Freak out,” “Walking on Sunshine, “Vogue” and Katy Perry’s current hit, “Roar.”

Childhelp’s major developments included opening residential treatment villages, providing group homes, establishing the Child abuse hotline, and connecting people with adoption services.

Along with the fashion show, Childhelp awarded Veronica Nazzaro-Penzone the Heart of an Angel award.

“Every child she touches, she brings out the angel within them,” said Fedderson of the award recipient.

Before the event began, guests were greeted by an assortment of items to bid on including purses, spa packages, vacations and more. In addition, Just Ruby displayed fashions that were seen in the show, and the 16-year-old starter of the direct sales company Origami Owl mingled and showcased her designs.

The event effortlessly combined “philanthropy, fun and fashion” with the pretty in pink table decorations, sweet desserts, live auction benefiting the organization and a group of people all aiming toward the same goal-seeing children safe and happy.
