Designer Spotlight: Jac Vanek

Designer Spotlight: Jac Vanek

“I went to college at UCLA,” says Vanek. Her parents were helping to pay for her education, but they urged her to get a job. With an already established online presence through social media usage in high school, Vanek thought of ways to harness her strong followings. She ended up being inspired by charm bracelets.

“I thought it would be really fun to make more of a statement with them,” she said. “I took these big rubber bracelets and put different words on them. I posted them on MySpace, got money through PayPal…it was super sketchy!”

Her modest roots blossomed though. “It kind of just started from there,” Vanek said. “I did the bracelets for a while, gained some momentum, and then started doing t-shirts, and from there it just slowly expanded.”

While the rubber bracelets came from overseas, this momentum has increased Vanek’s recognition and has changed the way she makes her products. “Everything we do now is local in downtown L.A.” says Vanek.

It’s safe to say Vanek’s unique sense of design makes every Jac Vanek item a conversation starter. With clever references to various aspects of pop culture that influence Vanek directly, each design has a personal message and story behind it that forms an intimate connection with customers, some of whom who have known Vanek for nearly a decade through her online presence.

“Everything I do is very tongue-in-cheek,” Vanek said. Everything I create is just a different aspect of my personality. I never take myself seriously.”

Jac Vanek represents the weirdos, the outcasts and the ones who are brave enough to be unapologetically themselves. “I make stuff that I want to wear,” Vanek explained.

Jac Vanek embodies the movers, the shakers and the ones who are brave enough to jump blindly into the unknown in the name of desire.

“I don’t know much about fashion,” Vanek said. “I just know the way I want to live my life and the stuff I’m interested in and I’m just doing my own thing.”

The History Behind CHI

The History Behind CHI

As a child, he would often help his mother make dyes from plants and vegetables in the Palestinian village they lived in. “Coloring hair became an art for me – art on a live canvas.” Against family wishes, he attended school in Arkansas. His dream was almost averted when he found out he was allergic to ammonia, an ingredient in hair dyes. Instead of giving up, he created the world’s first ammonia-free hair dye.

Farouk Systems is a one billion dollar year company and employs around 2,000 employees. Farouk collaborated with NASA scientists to create the CHI line and has loyal clientele such as Madonna, Demi Moore and Courtney Cox. Chi has received numerous awards such as Best Defrizer for Beauty Launchpad’s Readers Choice Awards and many more. Shami said his business all started with a dream “to provide my fellow hair artists with a safer workplace, an environment free of harsh chemicals, advanced knowledge through education and new professional-only systems that could not be duplicated at home.”

CHI Silk Infusion is one of the many products that CHI offers. Silk Infusion is a leave in Alcohol Free reconstruction treatment promoting softer and smoother hair. It also protects your hair from mechanical and environmental damage. All CHI products contain positively charged silk molecules to build strength and improve moisture.

I recently tried the product myself. I really had no idea to what except since I had never heard of this company before. I live in the Southwest and with all the dry desert air my hair gets very dry quickly. I used the Silk Infusion on my hair (it is also good on the skin) by rubbing some drops in my hair. It was really easy to use and a little bit went a long way, so there was no need to use the entire bottle in one application. My hair felt lighter and I went about my day. I really noticed a huge difference the next day when I washed my hair. It was so smooth, soft and full of life. I felt like that girl in the commercial continuously tossing my hair around because I was just amazed at how different it was. It really did feel silky smooth.

Orange Is The New… Red?

Orange Is The New... Red?

From tangerines to pretty peaches this fruity shade is appearing on A-List lips worldwide. Runway explains the top five reasons why orange lipstick just works.

1.) IT’S FUN!

Nothing says summer like bright and happy hues. Lemony yellow sunshine, turquoise waves and the bold colors in fabric on the catwalks this season, incorporating orange into your make-up shows that you are fun and arn’t afraid to try new looks that are outside the box.

2.) IT COMPLIMENTS THE SPRING TRENDS

Wearing an orange shade compliments not only the bright pops of color in the Spring wardrobe trends, but the floral and metallic pieces work well if you choose the right shade. Try not to wear a shade that is too bright if you are going with gold or orange fabrics, as you don’t want your colors to clash, or make you appear washed out. Bright colors work best with more neutral ensembles or pastel spring floral pieces.

3.) IT WORKS WITH ALL SKINTONES

Everyone can find the perfect orange that works with their skintone. If you have a warmer, golden tone look for yellow based oranges. If its a shimmer gloss, look for bronze or copper flecks to enhance your glow. For cooler skintones that are more pink, opt for coral or red-orange shades. If you’re fair, opt for pastel peach shades or true orange color, medium to olive skin tones can get away with bright, bold oranges and deep complexions should opt for burnt orange or hues that have a brown or brick tint to them

4.) IT’S SOMETHING NEW

New trends are refreshing. By mixing up your look you can experiment with new hues and looks that work for you. Or maybe you’ll find that it doesn’t. By being able to play with new color groups, it allows you to be creative and play dress up, which is always fun even if it doesn’t become a permanent part of your beauty routine.

5.) IT WORKS FOR DAYWEAR

While traditional red lipstick is sometimes hard to work into wearing to the office or brunch, peachy glosses and nude balms with a hint of orange can liven up daywear without being too over the top.

MAC for Valli Show

Pro longwear concealer and the prime highlighter was used to bring the skin to its flawless natural complexion, while evening the tone of the skin while brightening. The eyes were defined using a tinted shade to create a strong brow, for a more natural look, without filling in with color. On the lips, he used a conditioner tube to hydrate, and then blotted to remove shine. “Beauty and simplicity of really perfect looking natural skin. Raw realism, handsome heroes, re-born skin” – Val Garland.

For Veronique Branquinho’s show, Inge Grognard went for a eye catching look with a bold use of color around the eyes making it the focal point of the face. “A positive dark mood incorporating orange… a flattering colour that brings out the colour in the eyes” -Inge Grognard. The face began with face body and foundation blended over moisturized skin. Studio finish concealer was used only where necessary adding the perfect finishing touch. Face and Body was used, 2 shades lighter, to highlight over the cheekbones and bridge of nose. The eyes were lined with Blacktrack, drawn on under the eye not quite reaching the corners. Over the upper lash is Blacktrack fluidline, drawn on very tightly along the upper lashline, creating a solid line through the length o the eye. MAC’s Pro genuine Orange Chromaline is applied above backtrack creating a solid, bold, orange line. Orange eye shadow is then patted over. Neo Orange pigment and orange eye shadow are mixed and added. The eyes are finished with NC15?NW20 Chromagraphic Pencil and Haute and Naughty black mascara applied lightly to deepen and define. The lips were finished with the conditioner tube to neutralize. This look is bold and attractive for Paris Fashion Week.

Chloe wanted to showcase the iconic Chloe girl who is both eerie and pretty. Models had perfect skin with pinky nude blush on the cheeks. We received a preview of the Beautiful Iris Eye Shadow, and to top it off, the lips were left natural.

Kenzo wanted a “1950’s, with a slight punk edge” look for his models. With eyebrows to frame the face and an embellished eye with a punk edge, we certainly got that feel. To level the eyes, there was a uniform complexion with shimmery highlights. A Pearl Crème base was placed on the lips to give us that girl.

AF Vandervorst picked a neutral palette to work with. The models had bare eyes but highlighted cheeks. However, with Ruby Woo Lipstick, the lips popped on the runway making it the focal point.

Issey Miyake wanted the “spirit of the forest.” His women walked the runway with clean skin and cool flush on the cheeks. The forest really spoke through the Pure Flash Electric Cool Eye Shadow, which really highlighted the eyelids. Hydrated lips finished the look.

Julien David focused on the word pure. To achieve that look, there was an even, perfected skin that softened the face. To stick with the theme, fingers blended in the Close To You Lipstick to give the cheeks a slight flush. Silver eye shadow and black mascara gave definition to the eyes.

Vanessa Bruno had Amelia Earhart in mind for her makeup. Sun Power Mineralize was placed over face to give a nice sun kissed look. With curled lashes, brushed eyebrows and Twig lipstick to finish the looks, it clearly had us flying.

Haider Ackermann gave us a society woman, stripped down and raw. To balance an exaggerated brow, we saw a luminous glow on the face with shimmery highlights.

Vivienne Westwood was inspired by a tribe in Peru. Using sheer and matte colors to draw the connection, Westwood completed the look with a sneak peak at MAC’s fall 2014 nail colors. The gold and matte colors were quite but impactful.

Rock That Fashion LA Recap: Zhang Jingjing

Rock That Fashion LA Recap: Zhang Jingjing

The gorgeous gowns presented by Zhang Jingjing were red carpet worthy. One after another, glittering pieces of art came floating down the catwalk. After picking my jaw up a couple of times, I continued to photograph the gowns, some floor sweeping while others were mini’s embellished with intricate beading and feathered ruffle skirts. The beauty was in the details, delicate stones and fringe glittered under the runway lights while the models walked elegantly, their braided crowns perched neatly on their heads.
