Hello, My Name is SPF

Sunscreen Sprays and Lotions

Traditional sunscreens can come in the form of lotions, oils, creams and sprays and are recommended to be used year-round by organizations like the American Cancer Society. And remember, just because it is a cloudy day or you plan to be indoors, that doesn’t mean you can skip the SPF; the sun can still wreak havoc on your skin during cloudy weather and even through glass.

When shopping for the perfect SPF (which stands for Sun Protection Factor), be sure that you snag one that is a broad-spectrum sunscreen; this means that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA radiation doesn’t cause sunburns but it does increase your skin cancer risk, while UVB rays are the ones that cause nasty burns.

As far as going with a lotion, oil or spray, the choice is yours. The ease of a spray, like Sun Bum Continuous Sunscreen Spray, is perfect for those on the go, while lotions and oils have moisturizing benefits. Just keep in mind when applying any type of SPF that the amount of sunscreen you should apply to your body is roughly the same amount that can fit into a shot glass.

Tinted Moisturizers, BB Creams and CC Creams and Makeup with SPF

Who doesn’t want skin that looks young, fresh and vibrant as long as possible? That is why SPF is a key product to use on your face daily. The harmful UV rays from the sun can cause you to age faster and can leave you with premature wrinkles, sunspots and even worse, the big ‘C’ (yes, we are talking about skin cancer). So, do not rely on makeup with SPF alone. Be sure to put on a double dose when it comes to protecting your face. What do we mean by a double dose? Keep using your makeup that includes SPF protection, but also put a layer of sunscreen on before by using a facial moisturizer with SPF, a tinted moisturizer with SPF or a BB or CC Cream that includes it.

West Coast skin specialist, Trish Sbarro recommends using at least SPF 30 on your face prior to applying makeup. Her favorite sunscreen pick is the La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Ultra-Light Sunscreen Fluid because of its matte finish and high level of sun protection. Sbarro also reminds you to protect your pout with a lip balm that has an SPF of at least 30, a good pick is Shiseido Sun Protection Lip Treatment with SPF 36.

Sunscreen Tips to Live By:

-Apply your choice of sunscreen about 15 minutes before you head outdoors.

-A shot glass of sunscreen is the ideal amount to cover your entire body.

-Reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours, sooner if you have taken a dip in the water.

-Pick a broad-spectrum SPF to protect against ALL harmful UV rays.

-Don’t forget the “trouble” zones that are often neglected when you apply sunscreen. These include the ears, back of the knees, hands and feet.

And lastly,

-Don’t rely on last season’s sunscreen. SPF loses its potency over time so make sure you are 100% protected by picking up a new sunscreen with each new season.

Shopping In Berlin

If ever you find yourself roaming the charming streets of Berlin, Germany you will want to take this guide along. Nestled throughout the city are hidden gems, in the form of boutiques and department stores, with some of the most fabulous fashion finds available.

Individualism and innovation are nurtured here, which allows indie boutiques to bloom alongside mainstream shops and thrive. Lala Berlin, a boutique that started as a knitwear and scarf producer, sells trendy separates, while Starstyling, a boutique that features photos of their clientele wearing their purchases, offers more artistic and eccentric pieces. The Weinmeister Strasse shopping plaza is rich with fashion that would appeal to the retro hipster type, while Rosen Hoefe and KaDeWe cater more to the modern fashionistas, featuring stores such as MAC, Chanel and high end German designer Kilian Kerner. In addition to new collections hitting the quaint storefronts, the vintage fashion movement has exploded in the European city. Vintage stores such as Stiefelkombinat and Aladdin’s Cave are highly sought after by locals and tourists alike.

Aside from guiding you to the top shops, we also got a sneak peek during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at the trends that will be popular this year, so you can pack accordingly and arrive in style. Highlights included new collections by Laurels, Dawid Tomaszewski and Malaikaraiss. Fashion in Berlin this season is very clean and features simplistic lines, a dominance of muted palettes and exquisite tailoring.

Laurels chief designer, Elisabeth Schwaiger, brought forth a retro sixties vibe in her new line, incorporating black leather, biker boots and studs. If you are wanting to incorporate this style into your personal wardrobe, opt for a blend of rocker chic accessories on delicate fabrics. A soft t-shirt dress paired with a leather cuff, chain embellished handbag or black booties would be a good starting point.

Designer Malaika Raiss presented a line that was charming and delicate. The designs were simplistic, yet did not bore. The details and original layering allow the line to feel fresh and unique with off-the-shoulder maxi dresses, short-sleeved sweaters, and knits worn over satin dresses. Inspired by the world of botany, Raiss said moss, algae and rocks inspired the palette of green and brown with an infusion of silvery blue nuances. It is a collection for the demure woman who favors youthful fashion.

In contrast to Raiss’ ultra-feminine line, designer Dawid Tomaszewski showed pieces that presented a more masculine side. Tomaszewski stated before the show, “The Tomaszewski woman is changing, she is more masculine.” Shying away from some of the playful designs we have seen in the past, he used more classic cuts, a darker palette and more traditional tailoring. What we adore about this new collection is that, although we witnessed a new serious side in the assemblage of pantsuits, cardigans and wool coats, they were designed in lux fabrics upping their glam appeal. Cashmere, silk and Swarovski stone embellishments allowed the line to feel luxurious and unique. Highlights of the line included an embroidered black sheer blazer and grey cashmere trouser set, and a gray silk evening gown, worn with a black goatskin jacket that would be perfect for an after show gala.

Overall, the fashion was diverse and offered a multitude of options.

Caitlin Carver – RUNWAY® EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

You play Hayley Heinz on ABC Family’s The Fosters. You are a member of the dance team on the show, but you are a dancer in real life, too, right? Tell us about your dance background…

I am a dancer in real life! My mom put me in ballet when I was two, and then when I got a little older I started jazz, contemporary, tap, hip hop, and pointe. I have not stopped since. Dance is my first love!

How about the dances you have to learn for the show? Do you meet often for practice, like a real-life high school dance team?

Yes, we definitely feel like a team! And we all get along really well, which is a little different from how the team is portrayed on the show. We have several days of rehearsal together before we film the dance scenes. Each rehearsal usually lasts around 8 hours!

On the show, your character is good friends with Mariana and dates Jesus. Some fans call her the “bad girl” of the show. She definitely does some manipulative things, but do you place her as a “bad girl,” a “good girl,” or somewhere in-between?

She is definitely not a “good girl,” though I wouldn’t necessarily label Hayley as a “bad girl” either. She just manipulates her way into getting exactly what she wants. Is that always bad? 😉

What is your favorite part of being on set for The Fosters?

My favorite part would have to be working with such genuine and talented people. Between the cast, crew, directors, writers, and producers, I leave the set every day completely inspired.

Who is your best friend on set? Do you hang out with anyone outside of filming?

I love them all. I can’t choose one best friend, haha. I hang out with Amanda Leighton and Jordan Rodrigues the most.

Decision time: If you, Caitlin, could date any of the characters on the show, who would you pick? Wyatt, Brandon, or stay true to character and pick Jesus?

I really love Wyatt right now. He is an attentive and patient boyfriend. It doesn’t get better than that. OH, and that hair… yes, please!

Do you have any special skills or hobbies we don’t know about?

Sports. I think I’m secretly a tomboy. I love basketball, softball, and soccer. And I’m surprisingly good at them.

Describe your perfect day, from waking up to going to bed.

I’d start with a LARGE cup of coffee, go for a morning hike with my best girlfriends, film all day, have dinner with my family, watch a cheesy romantic movie, and drink sleepy-time tea before going to bed.

If acting could take you to one place in the world, where would you want to go? What would you want to do while you were there, and who would you take with you?

Greece! I would reenact Mamma Mia with my mom, haha! I am dying to go to Greece.

You describe yourself as a coffee addict. What is your favorite coffee drink? Favorite café?

I love black coffee! Sometimes I’ll add a pack of Stevia for a sweeter taste. LA has the cutest cafés. Some of my favorites are Aroma, Intelligentsia, and Lamill.

Do you have any upcoming projects that we should look out for?

Yes! I have two movies in the works. I can’t say too much yet, but they are both very exciting and totally different. Keep an eye out next year!

Straighten Up!

Straightening hair on a consistent basis can lead to damage, so we recommend only washing your hair every other day to leave some natural protective oils intact. Using the recommended products below, along with the heating tools, will not only elongate the life of the tools, but of your hair as well. Now, onto this quick and easy process with our new beauty BFF’s.

It all starts with a little lather. Your shampoo and conditioner choices start the foundation for the perfect end result. Using a smoothing shampoo that cleanses, while weightlessly smoothing frizzy hair, with help to improve texture and leave your hair manageable. A good choice is EverSleek Intense Smoothing Shampoo.

After your shower, towel dry your hair to ready it for your ultimate frizz fighter. We recommend going one of two ways. First, you can opt for a smoothing balm such as Hemp Straightening Balm. When applied to problem areas throughout the hair, it helps tame frizz. The alternative is an oil base serum such as Moroccan Oil’s Glimmer Shine Spray. When applied to damp hair, this weather-resistant formula helps keep hair smooth and sleek in damp or dry environments. It makes a great choice for when you are traveling and are unsure of weather conditions.

With both these products, you will want to apply a little at a time, so you do not weigh your hair down, and you will want to brush through your tamed, damp locks with a good brush. Not all brushes are created equal, just as if you would use a round brush to create volume, you will want to opt for a good paddle brush for straight locks. The TIGI Professional large paddle brush is a great choice. Its tourmaline-infused pins emit ions that seal each cuticle for stronger, shiner and static-resistant hair. Any product or tool that can cut down on static is crucial in hair straightening 101.

Next, you are ready to dry. The CHI Air Pro Expert Ceramic Hair Dryer is a good choice with its infrared heat technology. Again, this simply means that it produces negative ions to prevent humidity and the aforementioned dreaded static. Its ceramic coils also keep the temperature regulated at all times for even styling. Use your paddle brush, along with your blow dryer, to dry hair completely.

Before using your straightener, you need to prep and protect your hair from heat damage. To do so, choose a flat iron spray that is made for extreme heat protection. Our choice is the Giovanni 2Chic Brazilian Keratin & Argan Oil Flat Iron Styling Mist. It is a dual-smoothing complex made from plant-sourced protein so it is gentle on your tresses.

Now that you are protected, it is time to straighten up! Using a ceramic plated straightener piece out hair in small sections so that you are not raking over strands multiple times. For fine hair, it is recommended to straighten one-inch sections, and for thicker hair, half-inch sections. The TRESemme Salon Professional Ceramic Styler heats to over 200 degrees for salon quality performance and features three heat settings for various hair types. It also features an auto shut off after 72 minutes, which is a great feature for any girl who is rushed in the mornings.

To top off the look, we recommend a good finishing spray. A high-shine glossing mist will help keep fly-aways at bay, and will deliver a reflective, lightweight veil, boosting your shine factor. You can apply by lightly misting over hair, or by spraying into palms and detail with your fingertips. We love the shine factor of Bumble and Bumble’s BB Shine On Spray.

Last but not least, a good product to have on hand is a long-lasting hair masque. Not for everyday use, this masque can be applied from time to time to help tame hair and control frizz. The Keratase Relax Slim Masque reduces hair volume by 50%, eases detangling and provides nutrition and softness to hair. It is a good investment for those who have thick, unruly hair and are seeking silky smooth straight locks.

Now that your beauty cabinet is stocked with the right tools, you can be confident in styling your hair, and saving time and money, without visiting the salon.

The Sweater Dress: Formal, Casual and Everywhere in Between

The sweater dress simply has to be one of the best fashion creations for the Fall / Winter season. Year after year this trend continues to be popular giving us an excuse to remain cozy while stylish.

Comfortable and on-trend, sweater dresses takes the guess work out of putting together an outfit and possesses incredible layering potential. The sweater dress can be worn alone, or paired with leggings or long over-coats as well as an array of accessories. Scarves and ankle boots are a favorite, or try pairing a solid color sweater dress with bold, chunky jewelry for a night out. Printed choices also pair well with flats and a jean jacket for a more casual look.

Dresses also range from warm, chunky knits to sleek, body hugging cashmere. Lengths also vary, from styles that skim the thigh for a provocative touch or knee length to meet the edge of a leather boot, there are plenty of options and I have picked out some favorites that are available for Fall/Winter 2014/2015.

How to Deal with the Stresses of Performance Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are very common in today’s society. As a result, here is a list of techniques that a person can use to help manage the daily stresses and anxieties of their profession.

– Sometimes, we get stressed when everything happens all at once. When this happens, a person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off of the problem. A person could take a walk, listen to some music, read the newspaper or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things.

– When facing a current or upcoming task at your job that makes your anxious, divide the task into a series of smaller steps and then complete each of the smaller tasks one at a time. Completing these smaller tasks will make the stress more manageable and increases your chances of success.

– Sometimes, we can get anxious over an event that we will have to perform in the near future. When this happens, visualize yourself doing the event in your mind. For instance, you have to perform in front of a large group of people in the next few days. Before the big day comes, imagine yourself doing the event in your mind. By doing this, you will be better prepared when the time comes. Self-Visualization is a great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation or event.

– Another technique that is very helpful is to have a small notebook of positive statements that makes you feel good. Whenever you come across an affirmation that makes you feel good, write it down in a small notebook that you can carry around with you in your pocket. Whenever you feel anxious, open up your small notebook and read those statements.

– Remember that no one can predict the future with one hundred percent certainty. Even if the thing that you feared does happen there are circumstances and factors that you can’t predict which can be used to your advantage. For instance, you miss the deadline for a project you have been working on for the last few months. Everything you feared is coming true. Suddenly, your manager comes to you and tells you that the deadline is extended and that he forgot to tell you the day before. This unknown factor changes everything. Remember: We may be ninety-nine percent correct in predicting the future, but all it takes is for that one percent to make a world of difference.

In dealing with your anxieties, learn to take it one day at a time. While the consequences of a particular fear may seem real, there are usually other factors that cannot be anticipated and can affect the results of any situation. Get all of the facts of the situation and use them to your advantage.

Our anxieties and stresses can be difficult to manage in the workplace. The more control you have over your stresses and anxieties, the better off you will be in the long run.

Travel The World Together Without Leaving The USA

New Orleans

With its French and Spanish influences, NOLA not only transports you culturally, but you’ll also feel like you’re in another time period. The famous French Quarter holds rich history and in spite of all of the fires and floods that has affected the Crescent City, it stands strong with some of the oldest buildings in the country. Businesses, hotels, and homes all have character unique to the area, but with a strong French influence—hence the name. You can sit on a balcony or in coffee shops sipping café au laits and eating pillowy beignets, or listen to rich jazz music at Preservation Hall. New Orleans is one city that you’ll want to take a guided tour in; known for its haunted past, witchy ways, and vampire folklore, there is always something fascinating to learn and see. You can also venture out to the gorgeous plantation houses or go out to the swampy bayous to get the full Louisiana experience.

Las Vegas

So maybe Vegas isn’t your idea of a “European” vacation, but it’s an easy weekend getaway that delivers fun sights and there’s always something to do! Take a romantic gondola ride at The Venetian or how about a roller coaster ride overlooking the Statue of Liberty? The Paris hotel not only has a replica Eiffel Tower, but inside, it is decorated like the streets of the city of love, with a painted ceiling of blue skies and clouds, iron benches, and cobblestone walkways. With many hotels having various city themes, you can get a worldly vacation in just a couple of days!

New York

Although New York City doesn’t really look like any other city, the people and food are as diverse as any place can be. Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Sri Lankan, Brazilian, Filipino, West Indian, you name it, New York has got it. From restaurants to delis to grocery stores to food trucks, you can find just about any delicacy your heart desires.

Disney World

Well, if you can’t do Europe, and you have some extra cash and a week to spare, you might as well go to Disney World! Aside from traveling around the globe at Epcot Center, you can feel like you’re jumping into a fairytale at Magic Kingdom.

Make A Friendly Winter Statement with Faux Fur

Winter calls for cozy, warm and fuzzy accessories. Layers upon layers of the softest material is one of the reasons we love this season so much. Fur is a huge trend, and has been for Fall/Winter for as long as I can remember in the fashion world. But for us who are seeking a friendlier option to the trend, faux fur is a sweet swap.

We’ve included a few options on how to incorporate this lux addition to your wardrobe without going overboard. Gone are the days of the oversized, floor sweeping pelts and fur coats. This winter its about subtle additions of richness and glamour.

The Vest:

If you like the look of a winter faux fur coat but don’t need that much warmth or protection, a vest is a good option. If you’re faux is a patterned texture, opt for a solid tee underneath with either solid pants or a complimenting print to your vest.

The Scarf or Wrap:

A great was to dramatically dress up an ensemble, while also keeping your throat toasty warm, is the faux scarf or neck wrap. Rich deep brown and black options make this a perfect choice for accenting formal attire.

The Scarf

The Mittens:

Stylish and functional, faux fur mittens are the perfect addition for any snow bunny’s ensemble.

Jean Paul Gaultier Bids Adieu to RTW in Paris

French designer Jean Paul Gaultier showcased his last ready-to-wear collection on September 28th at Paris Fashion Week. Gaultier went out in style with quite a show! The prelude to the big beauty pageant theme led the way with bouffant hair, French sailor stripes, a silver sequin staircase and disco music. The show featured a striptease by Spanish actress Rossy de Palma, sequined bike shorts paying homage to the Tour de France, and models Mexican wrestling.

Gaultier, who has been a huge part of the ready-to-wear fashion industry since the 1980s, surprised everyone with his announcement of this being his last show. The brand will now focus on haute couture, perfume, and collaborations within the industry.

All of the excitement and fun aside, Gaultier’s last RTW collection leaves us wanting much more. The S/S 2015 collection is bringing tons of business-sass with tuxedo dresses and pantsuits flowing into capes, as well as corsets, cold shoulder tops, and plenty of casual, but sexy jumpsuits.

Fashion Week will not be the same without Jean Paul Gaultier’s outstanding mix of elegance, kitsch, and racy.

Parisian Resort Wear With Jacquemus

Simon Porte Jacquemus revealed his SS2015 collection at Paris Fashion Week on September 23rd. Playing with shapes, stripes and light fabrics, the line reminded us of vacationing in the South of France where we lazily lay by the pool, play a round of tennis, and have cocktails on the veranda. With damp hair laying flat against their shoulders, which were bare as shirts loosely hung off of them, exposing bikini tops, models walked the runway looking relaxed with subtle make-up. Jacquemus did a wonderful job of bringing the right summer air to his comfy and carefree collection.

Paris, France: The Perfect Fall Luxury Getaway

This fall season, everyone is raving about the hottest makeup looks and fashion trends that are pouring in during Fashion Week. But we all love a little relaxation time to unwind and even do a little shopping. Getting away from the daily hustle and bustle of things is what we all dream of and Runway has a little advice on how to take that dream vacation and turn it into reality.

If you’re a fashionista, a couture queen, or just a loyal shopper and advent fashion show follower, this dream getaway could be your ultimate French fairytale come true. If you’re going to be staying in Paris, I suggest, for pure elegance, service, and experience, The Hotel Le Bristol. This beautiful, five-star, award-winning hotel in Paris is number one. The hotel hosts rooms and suites, some with Eiffel tower views, as well as lavish courtyard and gardens.

Because of its impeccable location, this posh hotel, built in 1925, carries an 18th century Parisian feel throughout and has some truly amazing eateries and amenities. The Hotel Le Bristol was also chosen as the 2014 Traveler’s Choice winner for best hotel. And if you love fashion, you’ll be delighted that Hotel Le Bristol is located just minutes from the elegant Rue Du Faubourg. This famous street in Paris is home to fashion. The popular Parisian street also features cafés, restaurants, and shopping

Just east, you’ll find the Rue Du Faubourg Saint Honore extension. Some stores we love here include; Chanel, Rue Cambon Paris (The house of Coco Chanel), Christian Louboutin, Eclairerur (multi-brand store), Dolce & Gabbana, Gianni Versace, Gucci, Prada and much, much more. Don’t leave without visiting this street, located in the arts and fashion district

If you’re a fashion guru, you’ve probably flown in for Paris Fashion Week. PFW is presented in multiple locations, and has been running this week and ending today. Get a glimpse of some of the hottest looks from the Spring/Summer 2015 Ready to Wear Collections. See what the designers have created this year while snagging some hot new ideas.

If you’re looking for fabulous French cuisine or a cocktail, check out The Bar at Le Bristol. This Parisian bar is easily one of the trendiest bars in Paris. Located downstairs, inside of the hotel, its 18th century charm is sure to delight your senses while one of their famous signature cocktail tingles your taste buds, as you enjoy the beautiful views.

For dining, I suggest some of the hotels best restaurants. Head Chef Eric Frechon is the magic behind multiple restaurants here at Le Bristol. Epicure French restaurant presents its guests with great traditional French cuisine in a fresh, innovative way. It is a great place for lunch and dinner.

If you’re looking for a more upscale experience, check out the fabulous 114 Faubourg. This restaurant has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The cuisine here is a favorite among both tourists and locals. Along the Rue Du Faubourg, you’ll find more art, history, and fashion than in most cities, and when taking a trip to the city of light and fashion, don’t forget to stop by some of the most famous spots in Paris.

Soak up the Eiffel tower, or even take a stroll to the Love Lock Bridge, which can be found around various locations in Paris as well. Many have tried to shut these bridges down, but they continue to thrive, holding more locks each year. Don’t leave without taking home some special memories, tons of photos, and maybe a little romance? Paris is the vacation of your dreams if you’re looking for beauty, romance, passion, and of course, the best in fashion.
